Standard Deviation and Scrabble Ratings

I just re-found this explanation of how Scrabble ratings are calculated. The ratings work similar to those in chess, where as you win games you gain points, and the better the opponent you beat, the more points you gain, and vice versa. It is a cool application of the standard deviation. There is also some computer code here, so if you have coders in your class they might find this interesting as well. http://www.poslarchive.com/math/scrabble/ratings/how.html
