About Beacon
Located in downtown Evanston, IL, Beacon Academy offers a unique urban setting for the Orientation to Adolescent Studies. During the academic year Beacon is a high school that combines Montessori pedagogy with independent school best practices and IB curriculum.

Evanston is located on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan and is a short trip by car or transit from the City of Chicago. Beacon is within walking distance of both the EL and Metra trains. Evanston is home to Northwestern University, and has many unique commercial districts and neighborhoods, and delicious and exciting culinary options.

The Beacon Orientation has approximately 40 spaces available for participants.

Important Information

The Farm Experience

A unique aspect of the Hershey Orientation is that all participants live on the farm in dormitories for the full 5 weeks.

Living on the farm campus has proven to be a very special and foundational experience for past Orientation participants. Participants have a chance to be immersed in a community experience based very specifically on Maria Montessori’s idea for “erdkinder” in her writings on adolescent development.

The Hershey Farm is a lovely retreat spot, with lots of woods, beautiful gardens, and a state-of-the-art, beautifully furnished “farm house” and dorms with all wood floors and a commercial kitchen. There are patio spaces for lounging, a basketball court, animal barns, and walking trails.

Participants get a glimpse of the powerful experience offered to adolescents of being on the land, in a genuine community, in a social context where they share work and study every day.  The goal is that participants come to feel a bond with colleagues in this work and come to enjoy each other’s company and comradeship. Staying at the farm has been one of the highlights of the experience for past participants.

Director of Training: Laurie Ewert-Krocker

Laurie Ewert-Krocker is the upper school director and pedagogical advisor at Hershey Montessori School in Huntsburg, Ohio. She holds AMI diplomas at the primary and elementary levels, a BA in English from John Carroll University (OH), and an MA in English from the University of Washington. Ms. Ewert-Krocker was the founding head teacher of Hershey Montessori School’s Adolescent Community, a Montessori farm school model, and she works as a consultant to Montessori adolescent programs around the world.

About Grove and Redlands, CA

Set in the beautiful and quaint town of Redlands California, Grove has a high school campus and a nine acre farm campus that is a functioning farm with animals, orchards, fields, farm store, barn and historic schoolhouse renovated for classrooms and an events business. The Grove School is going into its 20th year and is one of the oldest and most well established Montessori adolescent schools in the United States.

Redlands is a city in southern California, between Los Angeles and Palm Springs.  It's known for its elaborate late-1800s buildings, such as the A.K. Smiley Public Library and the Morey Mansion. Kimberly Crest House & Gardens is a sprawling estate, with a Victorian mansion and Renaissance-styled gardens. Free concerts are held throughout the summer at the Redlands Bowl, a 1920s amphitheater.  Redlands is also home to the University of Redlands and ESRI, a billion dollar GIS mapping company.  Redlands is in an ideal location with access to outdoor activities at the beach (60 min), the mountains (30 min) and the desert (45 min).

Director: Tina Booth
Tina Booth is currently humanities and ethics teacher and associate pedagogical director at the Montessori High School at University Circle (Cleveland, OH). She holds the AMI elementary diploma from Bergamo a, a BA in archaeological studies from Boston University, and an MA in anthropology from Northern Arizona University. She has acted as Director of Training, advisor and lecturer for the Orientation in Huntsburg, OH.
